SEO Services for Steel and Metalwork Companies

For fabricators, welders and structural steel firms who are better at the work than their website suggests

Metalwork is one of the trades where the gap between capability and online presence is widest. Most fabricators built their reputation through referrals, repeat commercial customers and word of mouth — none of which shows up in a search result. Meanwhile the enquiries you would actually want are going to firms with less workshop capability and a clearer website. We build and optimise sites for fabrication businesses, and we start by learning how your buyers search rather than guessing.

SEO and AI search optimisation from £100 per month, including hosting, a full site audit and a dedicated phone number if you want one. New websites from £300 alongside a six‑month plan. No VAT to add.

Four Buyers, One Website

The single most common problem on a fabrication website is that it is written for one customer when at least four are searching.

  • "Welder near me"

Repair intent. Something is broken and needed back this week — a cracked trailer chassis, a gate hinge, a snapped bracket. Price-sensitive, urgent, and usually mobile. They will call whoever answers and looks close enough.

  • "Bespoke metal fabrication"

Made-to-measure intent. A one-off item to a drawing or a rough idea. This buyer wants evidence of capability — previous work, tolerances, materials, finishes — and is far less price-led than the repair customer.

  • "Wrought iron gates" / "metal railings"

Domestic product intent. Usually a homeowner. Wants to see photographs before anything else, cares about how it looks against the property, and is comparing you against three others on appearance alone.

  • "Structural steel fabricator"

Commercial and specification intent. A contractor, architect or specifier. Filtering on certification, capacity, execution class and whether you can hit a programme date. Photographs matter far less than credentials.

These are not variations on one query. They are four different buyers who need four different pages, and the fastest gain on most fabrication websites is simply giving each of them somewhere to land. A single "Services" page trying to serve all four ranks for none of them, because the page never becomes clearly about anything.

You can see this worked through in practice on two of our clients — a Nottingham engineering and fabrication business and a Derby gates and railings fabricator.

The Credentials You Hold Are Content You Are Not Publishing

This is the single biggest missed opportunity we see in the sector, and it costs commercial work specifically.

Fabrication is a trade with real, hard-won credentials attached — and most workshops mention none of them online. If you produce structural steelwork for construction, you will be familiar with BS EN 1090 and the Factory Production Control and execution class requirements that come with it. If you employ coded welders, their qualifications sit under BS EN ISO 9606. You may hold BS EN ISO 3834 quality requirements for fusion welding, or contractor accreditations such as CHAS, Constructionline or SafeContractor.

A specifier searching for a fabricator is filtering on exactly these things. When your website does not mention them, you are invisible to the buyer with the largest budget — not because you lack the credential, but because you never wrote it down. Meanwhile a competitor with identical certification and a better-written page takes the enquiry.

The same applies to capability specifics that fabricators treat as unremarkable: maximum plate thickness, bed sizes for laser or plasma cutting, whether you offer galvanising or powder coating in-house or subcontract it, whether you can do site survey and installation as well as supply. Every one of those is a search term to somebody, and a reason to be shortlisted.

If you work on powered or automated gates, there is a further set of obligations around safety and conformity that domestic customers increasingly ask about directly. That is worth addressing openly on a page rather than leaving prospects to wonder.

To be clear about our limits: we are an SEO and website company, not certification consultants, and nothing here is compliance advice. What we do is make sure the certifications and capabilities you already hold are stated accurately and prominently enough to be found. We will always ask you to confirm the specifics with your certification body or a qualified adviser before anything about them is published.

What We Do for Fabrication Businesses

Six areas. Which ones matter depends entirely on whether your work is mostly domestic, mostly commercial, or a mix.

  • Service Page Structure

Separating welding, fabrication, gates, railings, balustrades and structural work into pages that can each rank. The foundation everything else sits on.

  • Local SEO for Your Catchment

Getting found across the realistic travel radius for your workshop, not just the town it sits in. Google Business Profile set up properly and consistent details everywhere they appear.

  • Commercial & Specifier Content

Capability, capacity, certification and tolerances written for the contractor or architect doing the shortlisting. Usually the highest-value work and the most neglected content.

  • Project Galleries That Convert

Domestic buyers decide on photographs. Properly captioned, properly named, properly structured galleries of your own real work — never stock imagery of somebody else's.

  • Technical SEO & Schema

Structured data that tells search engines and AI models exactly what you fabricate, where, and to what standard. Plus the unglamorous fixes an audit turns up.

  • AI Search Optimisation

Making your site quotable when a buyer asks an AI assistant to recommend a fabricator. Specific, verifiable capability detail is what gets cited.

Why Word of Mouth Stops Being Enough

Most fabrication businesses we speak to are not short of work. They are short of the right work — and referral is a poor filter for that.

Word of mouth reproduces the work you already do. If your last five jobs were gate repairs, your next five referrals will be gate repairs, regardless of whether you would rather be quoting balustrade packages for a housing developer. Search is one of the few channels where you can deliberately choose which enquiries arrive, by choosing which pages you build and which terms you go after.

It is also the channel that keeps working when a key commercial customer goes quiet. A workshop carrying two or three large repeat accounts is one procurement decision away from a difficult quarter, and rebuilding a pipeline from nothing takes far longer than maintaining one.

None of which means abandoning what works. Referral will almost certainly remain your best-converting source. The point is having something underneath it.

Common Questions

Do you actually understand fabrication, or just SEO?

We are an SEO and website company, not fabricators. What we bring is the search side: knowing that repair, bespoke fabrication, domestic gates and structural steel are four separate buyers, and that certification detail wins commercial enquiries. We learn your specific capabilities from you before writing anything about them.

What search terms should a metalwork company target?

It depends on which work you want more of. Repair-led workshops target welding and mobile welding terms. Domestic work sits under gates, railings and balustrade searches with location attached. Commercial work is found through structural steel, fabrication capability and certification terms. Most fabricators need pages across at least two of these groups.

Should domestic and commercial work sit on the same website?

Usually yes, but on clearly separated pages with different content and tone. A homeowner choosing gates and a contractor checking execution class want completely different information. Splitting them across two websites is rarely worth the cost and dilutes the authority of both.

Does certification like EN 1090 help our search visibility?

Indirectly but significantly. It is rarely a high-volume search term on its own. What it does is qualify you for commercial enquiries where a specifier is filtering on exactly that, and it gives search engines and AI models a specific, verifiable fact to associate with your business. Certifications you hold but never publish are wasted.

We get most of our work through word of mouth. Is SEO worth it?

Referral reproduces the work you already do. If you want a different mix — more bespoke, more commercial, fewer small repairs — search is one of the few channels where you can deliberately choose which enquiries arrive. It also protects you if a large repeat customer goes quiet.

How long before we see enquiries?

Meaningful movement usually takes two to four months, which is why we work on a six-month minimum term. Fixes to existing pages that already rank can show results faster; entirely new pages competing for national terms take longer. We will tell you which situation you are in after the audit rather than promising a date.

Can you work on our existing website?

If it is built on the same platform we work on, yes, completely. If it is on a different one, we can either rebuild it from £300 or work on off-site SEO only — your Google Business Profile, directories, review platforms and backlinks. The audit will tell you which applies.

Do you work with fabricators outside Nottingham?

Yes. We work UK-wide and everything is delivered remotely. Our current metalwork clients are in Nottingham and Derby, but local SEO for your area does not require us to be based in it.
